About the Scholarship

Please carefully read all of the information on this webpage for eligibility requirements and the criteria we will use to evaluate entries.

The mission of this scholarship is to reward young, exceptional talent for their entrepreneurial spirit, leadership, and ingenuity through the funding of an annual, one time scholarship award of $10,000.

Many of our associates and sponsors completed their college education with the assistance of scholarships. Now we are passionate about inspiring the next generation of young entrepreneurs. Our scholarship is designed to both help a motivated student with their educational expenses and energize the entrepreneurial spirit of all our entrants.

The winner of the competition will be the student judged to have created and presented the best business plan executive summary for an original company. Competitive entries should demonstrate an original business model that will generate revenue and profit while filling a need or gap in the community, identified by the student.

About the competition:

  1. Eligibility
    • The scholarship competition is open to current high school seniors through college seniors.
    • Eligible applicants must be legal residents of the United States (Note: In previous years, eligibility was restricted to certain counties and jurisdictions in Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia. No such residency restriction is in effect for 2019)
    • One entry per student
    • Submissions from teams of students are accepted, but all team members must meet the eligibility requirements. The maximum number of individuals allowed on a team is 4.
    • Previous winners of the Tower Hill (or Kilner Group) Young Entrepreneur Scholarship are not eligible to apply for the 2019 competition
    • Immediate family members of Tower Hill associates or employees are not eligible to apply
  2. Entry Criteria
    • Entries must consist of a written business plan. Your business plan will be judged on the following:
      • Competitive entries should demonstrate an original business model that will generate revenue and profit while filling a need or gap in the community, identified by the student. This can take the form of a brick and mortar store, online business, app idea, or any number of other options.
      • Completeness. Your business plan should have the following sections: company overview, market analysis, organization chart, service or product line, marketing and sales projections, startup funding required and how it will be obtained, and financial projections. We encourage all applicants to visit the U.S. Small Business Administration website for an explanation of each section of the business plan.
      • Business plans will be judged on creativity, self-determination, and a purposeful, well-crafted argument as to why the company will succeed against the competition.
      • The “wow” factor will also be considered – additional weight will be given for ingenuity, storytelling, creativity and other intangibles that influence the growth potential of the business.
    • Initial entries are strictly limited to 5 pages, 12pt Times New Roman or Arial single-spaced font with 1” margins. Any entries longer than 5 pages will be judged solely on the first 5 pages. Please include a cover sheet (in addition to the 5 pages) with your name. Do not include your name on any of the 5 pages that will be judged. Entries will be assigned a random number and the judging panel will not see the names of applicants until after five finalists have been decided.
    • All entries must be submitted via the form at the bottom of this webpage**To submit your entry, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.

Please Note:

After the submission deadline for written entries has closed, five finalists will be chosen to present their business plan in person to a panel of judges. Additional criteria for the in-person presentations will be sent out with the finalist notifications.
